Hayward wildlife control Tip of the Month:
A Description of the Life and Look of the Little Brown Bat
The Little Brown bat is one of the most commonly found bats in North America. Because of their large colonies, they are the dominant form of bat in most areas of North America, which has made it possible for them to be studied more than any other bat species in the region.
The Look of the Bat
This animal gets its name because of its dark brown fur that is all over its body. This differentiates itself from the big brown bat, which can have various shades of brown or red in its fur. The wingspan of this animal is about 8.5 inches, and can range to about 10.5 inches. The animal is about 3 inches in length. The male is usually smaller than the female of the species, and neither the male or the female way more than a few ounces. The ears of these bats are small and rounded at one end, which is referred to as the targus. The four head of the animal is sloped and flattened, and there are 38 teeth in the mouth of an adult little Brown bat. Their teeth are extremely sharp, which enables them to be able to capture and hold insects, such as beetles and wasps.
Where Do They Live?
The habitat of the little Brown bat is across most of North America. While not as common in the southern regions of the United States, they are widely found in Canada and in the northern U.S. This even includes an extremely cold regions. There are some instances where these animals have been found in places like Iceland and Kamchatka, but they are not believed to be indigenous to these locations initially. The bats have three different roosting locations. They usually have a day roost area, a night roost, and a hibernation roost area. The day and night roosts are there locations during the spring and summer times. As the temperature start to get cold, the little Brown bat will move in a hibernation mode. At this point, it chooses its hibernation roost which is usually found in a building or tree. Some have even been known to hibernate under giant rocks, inside caves, or in woodpiles.
What Do They Eat?
The little Brown bat is in insectivore. Its primary diet is to eat insects like gnats, mosquitoes, moths, wasps, and mayflies. What separates it from the big brown bat is that the smaller species does not go after beetles and grasshoppers. These animals usually reach a lifespan of about seven years, some have extended to 10 or 11 years. The smaller species is often the prey for animals such as birds, snakes, and rats. Many of these animals wait until the little Brown bat is asleep, then swoop in on their day roost or hibernation roost where they eat the animal. This is one of the primary reasons why the hibernation roost is usually chosen in an area where a limited number of predators exist.
